Incredible Vegan Flour Tortillas
Homemade flour tortillas are incredible and worth the effort. After experimenting with various recipes I finally found one that works well. These come out nice and thin and the taste is amazing.
Here’s the recipe:
3 1/4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup vegan margarine
1 cup warm water
Mix flour, salt and shortening by hand until mixture becomes coarse in texture. (It helps to cut the margarine in small pieces first before adding). Add a bit of water at a time. Mix until the dough forms a nice round ball that sticks together. Knead for 5 - 7 minutes. (This can also be done with an electric mixer).
Shape dough into approximately 2” balls. Place a little margarine on your hands and grease the balls to prevent them from drying out. Cover the balls with a towel and let sit for 10 minutes.
On a lightly floured surface, roll dough balls with rolling pin into 10” circles.
Place tortillas on a hot skillet. When lightly brown flip and cook the other side.
Makes approximately 12 tortillas.
